Palazzo Mirto at Palermo

Located just off Palermo’s Piazza Marina, the Palazzo Mirto is one of Sicilly’s many grand aristocratic palaces, but one of the very in Palermo which is open to the general public, and no doubt every visitor here is grateful that it is. For any visitor arriving in their hire car from a tour of the island, this is an ideal way in which to introduce yourself to the historical grandeur of Palermo.
Built on the foundations of much older thirteenth and fourteenth century structures, the Palazzo Mirto was completed towards the end of the eighteenth century. Most of its grand salons are baroque in style, and are lavishly furnished with the family’s own impressive collection of antiques and works of art. More recently, this grand old house was the residence of the Lanza Filangeri family, whose last heir bequeathed it to the nation in 1982.
Palazzo Mirto offers a remarkable insight into the wealth, tastes, and lifestyle of the Sicilian aristocracy during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, and is one of the many attractions in Palermo which is certainly not to be missed.
